Iris van Herpen

Stylisme

Iris van Herpen described the design process of this dress : ’We first made a well-fitting dress of black fabric, that followed the shape of the body to the knees. Upon that dress there is a more complicated pattern of handiwork. They are all separate pieces of dark, aubergine leather with a gold foil treatment on the back. The pieces were hand cut into tiny [half-centimeter] strokes. Half of the strokes were turned 180 degrees to the left side and the other half were turned the other way. Then they were sewn together so that they stayed [in place] after they were hand-sewn onto the dress. All together they create a pattern of reflection that comes from the back of the leather, because they are turned at some points. It was a big puzzle to make the pattern connect with the body shape, but it looked quite natural in the end’.

’Actually, my most favourite custom-made dress is the latest dress that I made for Björk. We made a dress from many semi-transparent electric blue sheets that were all layered to create a shape of a shell. The angle of light makes the dress change from a very dark, dark blue to a reflective bright blue...I need to [avoid getting] stuck in my own little bubble or in the small world of fashion. I need it to not get crazy. I believe if you do a collaboration the right way with the right people there isn’t any limitation for your own creative pursuits. My creative processes are triggered/enriched by collaborations’. This dress took 4 months to complete.

“Sometimes I make a dress for her that is based on a design that I already did, but this was more customized, where she really explained to me the concept of the song and the video and the artwork that she wanted to make for MoMA. It was really from scratch, from the beginning on, and [the pieces were in both] materials and techniques I never did before. It was really for her and the concept of the song.”
“I didn’t want to have a really smooth dress”
“I wanted it to be raw, and that’s why we did all the pleating by hand. I [wanted] it to fit with the rocks and the landscape of Iceland.”

The ‘Sphaera’ dress is inspired by a future orchid-avatar that is hovering like an aura around her body, and continuously changes shape in harmony with Björk’s movements.
During the performance the dress turns into a bioluminescent creature, in collaboration with light artist Nick Verstand.

When I first approached Iris about the project I told her about this album I had made which was an attempt to make a soundtrack to an island. It was some sort of a sci-fi tale which is sort of after the apocalypse or how we’re gonna deal with global warming. We would all go together to this island and start anew where species would have merged, there would be mutants between birds and plants and humans. Outcame this fantastic dress that is light like a plant but also has bird feathers on it, it’s incredible. Obviously when I sing I need to be able to breathe so i need to expand my lungs as much as possible and i need to put ahold a microphone, and i do talk a lot about that with people that make my dresses that I need to be able to sing. I think when I put the dress on I kind of embody her splendidness and it kinda like makes you feel more in tone with the whole project and the whole theme of the show. I’m incredibly honored to be still collaborating with her, it definetely makes me sing better.

Interview

Do you have any special clients ?
I think one of my most special clients is Björk. I’ve made something for her for almost each collection. Everything is custom.
You’ve dressed Beyoncé and other entertainers as well.
With a lot of people I have dressed, like Lady Gaga, it’s more like you make something for a show. But with Björk it’s more like a collaboration. She explains to me where she is at that moment, and where she wants to go, and then she really asks me, “Can you design a dress inspired by that ?” It’s such a big challenge to dive into her world.
What’s the favourite thing you’ve made for her ?
I just made two pieces for her MOMA exhibition. Those two are my favourite so far.
