Mutual Core
Le clip a été tourné en Islande. Il s’agit d’une commande du Musée d’art contemporain de Los Angeles (MOCA) dirigé par Jeffrey Deitch (de 2010 à 2013), la vidéo a été dévoilée en septembre 2012 sur MOCAtv.
Dans sa nouvelle vidéo, (...) le jeune artiste de L.A. Andrew Thomas Huang offre plus d’indices quant à sa relation tumultueuse à l’environnement. Il place la chanteuse islandaise au centre d’un bac à sable originel, comme une mère Nature au travail. Au paroxysme de la chanson, des farfadets crachant de la lave – résultant de quatre mois de travail méticuleux sur des marionnettes faites à la main pour les effets spéciaux - tombent et se désintègrent autour d’elle. C’est bien sûr une chanson d’amour, somme toute classique pour Björk, imaginée, pourrait-on dire, à partir d’un épisode de Fraggle Rock sous acide. « Pour compenser la distance / Tu sais que j’ai tout essayé / Tu m’as proposé l’harmonie / Si les choses étaient faites comme tu l’entendais / Ma plaque eurasienne s’est dissoute / et a formé un noyau mutuel », elle chante avec honnêteté, délivrant chaque syllabe avec précision et tranchant. « Tu ne savais pas que j’avais ça en moi ».

Björk à propos du clip
This is for Mutual Core. This is based on the tectonic plates. Andrew always gets these weird requests from me. I kind of gave him a color palette and asked that it be sort of about the two tectonic plates, and how we are making them work together. And it was all about geology in a way. But I think that’s the reason I contacted Andrew Huang in the first place. Because he did this amazing video, I’m not gonna remember what it’s called now, you have to Google it, it wasn’t for a band or anything. He was working a lot with sand and deserts. So it was totally like, “Wow, we are overlapping here.” I’m so happy because he’s also doing two other videos for me now. He’s done three videos on this album [Vulnicura]. He’s been amazing.

Jeffrey Deitch [du MOCA] m’a contacté y’a un moment et il m’a proposé de collaborer là-dessus. Ca avait l’air d’une bonne idée. Parce que je suis une vieille punk, je n’ai jamais fait de pub ou de sponsoring ou quoique ce soit du genre – j’ai toujours été très claire là-dessus – mais avec ça, [Jeffrey] avait plutôt l’air de nous aider à faire un clip. Ça m’a paru plutôt honnête. Je ne ressens pas ça comme du sponsoring.Papermag - Novembre 2012
If you look at the app for "Mutual Core" it has this strata, the same palette that’s in the video. We made a kind of accordion made out of strata. That particular app is teaching kids about chords. Triads don’t have tension but then you move one note down and then it’s got a lot of tension. So you have this accordion of chords that you are trying to make work. That was the beginning. The video evolved from this. Andrew [Huang], the director, had recently made one called “Solipsist” which I thought was amazing and I thought he could go really well with this song. What’s important for musicians when we pick video directors, it’s not just about picking the best ones but picking the one who fits best with that particular song.
