Bachelorette
Dernier volet de la trilogie d’Isobel, qui conte sa découverte du monde civilisé. Elle se brûle les ailes au contact de la ville et décide de revenir dans la nature pour laisser s’exprimer son instinct.

« Bachelorette est le dernier clip que j’ai fait avec Bjork. Elle trouve un livre qui lui explique son destin, doit le suivre et tant qu’elle suit ce que le livre lui dit de faire, le livre continue de s’écrire et lui annonce qu’elle va rencontrer un éditeur. Elle va rencontrer un producteur qui va faire un show autour de son histoire à Broadway. On voit son histoire rejouée sur la scène du théâtre. Il y a la pièce dans la pièce. Jusqu’au jour où dans la vie réelle, elle se sépare de son éditeur. Elle casse le pacte avec son livre. Donc tous les livres s’effacent. Les gens le jettent, la nature reprend le dessus, envahissant tout (des spectateurs à la scène). Finalement, elle se retrouve au point de départ : dans la nature. Pour créer le clip de cette chanson romantique, Bjork m’avait simplement dit qu’elle s’inscrivait dans la trilogie d’Human Behavior et Isobel où elle était représentée comme une créature vivant seule dans les bois. A l’origine, elle voulait démarrer dans une forêt, rencontrer quelqu’un dans une ville, que finalement ça ne fonctionne pas et retourner dans la forêt où elle était heureuse. Ça rappelle beaucoup Human nature, mon premier long-métrage. J’avais envie de me faire violence sur ce clip, de fondre Bjork dans une situation qui me gênait. Mettre Bjork dans une situation romantique par exemple était ce que je pouvais faire de plus extrême. C’était ma manière de me mettre en porte-à-faux et de la pousser. L’idée l’a séduite et on est parti là-dessus. » (Interview dvdrama.net - Mars 2007)
Björk à propos du clip
Michel explains very well the way I create my songs. When I write, I plant little seeds. Then, the question is : When will they be ripe ? And that is up to Michel. For example, my favorite Michel video is Isobel. It’s Michel who found the poetry in it. He also found the thread we had on the first videos : Human Behaviour, Isobel and Bachlorette... It’s the same story with the same character who is neither Björk nor Gondry but a third person : us. It’s the story of a girl frightened by adults - a teenager who becomes aware of her femininity - then an instinctive character who discovers her femininity, with the good sides and the bad sides. In the end of Bachelorette, she realises she would be better where it all started : in the woods, alone. These videos are my different sides. (Les Inrockuptibles n°185)
So Isobel decides to return to the city and to take a train, like in the 30’s, in South America somewhere. She decides to confront love with love and confronts the cowards that don’t have the guts to fall in love with love. So you see - it’s like Isobel has returned.

There’s a lot of story-telling going on, a lot of brutal, in-your-face stories. One of them is this kind of Wuthering Heights epic.[She puts one hand melodramatically over her heart.]The first song in this epic was "Human Behaviour". The second one is "Isobel". I guess this one is the sequel.

Compared to Jòga, this looks like it was a massive production, where both Björk, Michel and the entire crew worked extremely hard. Who worked the hardest ?
ME of course ! and the whole crew as well. ;-) You’re right it was like a mini movie. a kind of mini nightmare, with all possible film techniques, and all the kinds of shooting (exterior shots with extras in black and white in the city / exterior colour, handheld camera in the forest (somewhere in a LA park) ; studio / crane shots with extras / many mini-sets / animation shots / post production on stock footage / 2nd unit shots...
the 1st AD impressed me. I don’t remember his name, he was an american guy, very good at his job. I thought "ok. I could never do that - I’ll stop being an AD soon" oh and the art department crew as well.
